It’s going to be a good year!

Dear Friends & Family,

Happy 2012! We did it, TRANSIT completed its first full cycle of resident artist! We want to thank you for all your support in seeing us through three successful residencies in 2011. We also want to thank our artist for their hard work and dedication to the program:  Utah Snyder, Michael Menchaca, and Kyra Devine. As for 2012, we will be taking time to evaluate the 2011 residency cycle before we dive into another year.

We have a few ideas in the works, but would like to hear feedback from you. Please take a moment to fill out the brief survey below. We will be using this information to help TRANSIT’s programming grow to better serve our community and resident artists.

As we take sabbatical this spring, look forward to a new format and new location to come summer/fall. Again we appreciate all of your support, and we will keep you posted of our progress and latest going-ons as more develops.

Cheers,

Kyra Devine: Transforming Man No.3: the Killer, the Cows and the Poison Cliffs

We only truly experience a dream one time. In the attempt to recollect a dream, it begins to transform. It becomes distorted and blurred—a skewed replica of what once appeared in our sleeping state. The instant a dream occurs, fragments begin to disappear. A dream is unique to the mind in which it was conceived; your nightmares, characters, strange environments are your own. I embrace these particular qualities of dreams in my work, speci␣cally through the process of printmaking. Similar to how a dream changes from its original state, my images evolve as they travel from drawings, that are then transferred onto wood, carved out, and printed. A visual reproduction of my dream is an attempt to recreate something that no longer exists, bringing a story to life that is impossible to accurately tell. By projecting my own subconscious thoughts and images onto others, my work becomes a means of storytelling. When viewed with new eyes, each individual interprets the images differently, and the transformation of my story continues.

-Kyra Devine

Kyra Devine, Transit’s final Artist-in-Residence for the 2011 cycle, has been in the studio for the last month in preparation for this week’s opening on Saturday, December 3.

During her time at Transit, Kyra has been focusing on her first stop-animation film and large wood cuts printed on handmade paper.

The opening will be December 3, 2011 beginning at 7pm. There will be a casual artist talk at 8pm you won’t want to miss.

See you Saturday!

Crooked American Boarders: The Beaner Express

Thank you all for attending the opening of Crooked American Boarders: The Beaner Express by Michael Menchaca.

This installation completely transformed the space at Transit. Even the Union Pacific train crossing less than twenty yards from our front door played a role in the exhibition, activating the lights on Menchaca’s train through a sensor on the tracks as it passed.

For the first time, we also included an Artist Talk. Thank you to all the people that asked insightful questions, and Michael, job well done with equally insightful responses.

It was a great show. Hope to see you next time!

Keep up the hard work Michael, and thank you for spending time with us at Transit.

Next up, Kyra Devine. Opening: Dec 3, 2011.

See you soon!

In the works: Michael Menchaca

Our current resident, Michael Menchaca is hard at work in the studio. He has been with us for about two weeks now completely renovating the space. Needless to say, it’s been exciting coming home to a little something new in TRANSIT everyday.

The opening of Michael Menchaca’s work will be on October 8, 2011.

Mail Time.

Our final resident artist for the 2011 cycle will be Kyra Devine. She will be joining us in mid-November at TRANSIT for her four week residency concluding with the unveiling of her project on Dec 3.

Currently, we are preparing the space to host Michael Menchaca, who will be moving in this Sunday! We are pimping out the artist room, so he best be prepared for some real TRANSIT luxury living. (Kind of.)

Anyway, what I’m trying to get to is…we just got a letter from Kyra in the mail, and it’s awesome.

And then I put it on my wall.

Thanks Kyra, see you soon!
